Depilatory Creams

Is there really a cream that simply removes hair without the precision of shaving or having to clench your teeth through a wax? It can seem too good to be true, but depilatory creams truly offer a quick and convenient way to remove unwanted hair at home.

What is a depilatory cream?

A depilatory cream, or hair removal cream, is simply a product that is used to temporarily remove undesired hair. In Australia, they are readily available in most supermarkets and pharmacies.

How does a depilatory cream work?

Depilatory creams work by breaking down keratin, the protein structure of your hair. This essentially causes the hair strands to dissolve so you can simply wipe them away. Unlike plucking or waxing, depilatory creams don’t actually remove the hair bulb or root.

The cream should be applied evenly over the desired area and then left undisturbed for the recommended amount of time. You can then remove a small test area to check that it’s worked, and if the hair comes off easily then the rest of the cream can be removed – voila, hair-free!

Using depilatory creams instead of shaving or waxing has a number of benefits:

  • Quick and pain-free – takes between 5-10 minutes for Veet’s sensitive skin variants, and 3-6 minutes for Veet’s normal skin variants
  • No knicks or cuts – from razor blades, or burns from hot wax

Before every use, test your skin reaction by applying and removing the product to a small part of the area you wish to treat, following the directions for use. If after 24 hours there’s no adverse reaction, you can continue to use it. Also make sure not to use depilatory creams on skin that’s spotty, broken, irritated or sunburnt, or on varicose veins, scars or moles.

What body parts can I use a depilatory cream on?

Bikini line

Last minute invite to the beach? Depilatory creams might suit you if you are looking to avoid the ouch-factor of waxing, but you still want a quick, convenient hair removal option for your bikini area. Try a product like Veet Silky Fresh Hair Removal Cream Sensitive, which has the added benefit of hydrating your skin for up to 24 hours.

Underarms

Underarms can be a tricky spot, which is why a depilatory cream is great for tackling all the little curves and nooks to achieve a neat and polished result. To fit your busy routine, Veet In Shower Hair Removal Cream for Sensitive Skin can even be used while you shower – you just apply it onto your dry skin at least 2 minutes before you step into the shower, and once the cream has been on your skin for 5 minutes in total, you can gently remove a small test area of the cream. If the hair comes away easily, it’s time to remove the rest of the hair. If the hair is more stubborn, you can leave the cream on for up to 5 more minutes, but don’t leave it on your skin for more than 10 minutes.

Legs

Get the silky-smooth legs you want without the hassle of shaving or making a trek to the salon. A depilatory cream is easy, efficient and painless to use on larger areas like your legs, and Veet Spray-On Hair Removal Cream makes it super quick and mess-free to apply.

Can I use a depilatory cream to remove facial hair?

Facial hair removal creams do exist, but unfortunately Veet’s Australian range of depilatory creams are not suitable for removing hair on your face. If you’d like to remove hair from your upper lip, cheeks or chin, we recommend you try Veet Easy-Gel Face Wax Strips Sensitive Skin instead.

Which is the best depilatory cream for me?

Convinced to give it a go? Veet has an extensive range of depilatory creams designed for various hair removal needs, including for when you might need a little extra care.

I have sensitive skin

Sensitive skin doesn’t mean you have to avoid a depilatory cream. All of Veet’s creams have been dermatologically tested and many are suitable for sensitive skin. Make sure to read the directions carefully, do a patch test before use, and thoroughly rinse your skin afterwards to remove any residual traces. If you have any concerns about skin irritation, it’s always best to check in with your doctor.

I’m pregnant

As their bodies go through hormonal changes during pregnancy, some women may experience changes in their skin or an increase in hair on their face, limbs or back. If you’re pregnant and thinking of using a depilatory cream, it’s best to talk to your doctor first.

I’m a dude

No need to feel left out – Veet has a range for you too! The Veet for Men Hair Removal Gel Cream quickly and effectively removes hair from your back, chest, legs, arms and underarms to get you looking clean and smooth.

Depilatory creams are a great at-home option if you’re looking for a quick, easy and pain-free hair removal solution. If you’re considering trying one out, you’re sure to find a great depilatory cream from Veet.
